The Universim Community Lab #6: Planet Types

52 posts in this topic

Hello Universim Citizens!

We hope you're having a good holiday season! It's time for a new lab, This time around we'd like to ask you to think about what type of planets you'd like to see.

Lab Mission #6

Planet types or 'Biomes' will be very important in the later stages of the game as you leave the mother planet and seek out new places to colonize and harvest for resources. We already have an earth like biome, the Mother Planet, as well as jungle, ice, desert and a few others.

For this lab we'd like you to suggest other biomes you'd like to see. Think big, small and everything in between! Multi biome or single biome?  Want to see a planet made entirely out of jelly? Let us know!

So fire up those creative engines over the holidays and help us form some new planet types!

We'll also be awarding a participation badge to everyone who participated in this lab once our badge system in place.
(Participation dictates idea submission before the next community lab starts. badge system is still in the works and TBA)

Have a Happy, Wonderful Holiday and a Happy New Year! We'll see you in 2016!

~The Universim Team

planet 1:

this come to mind. have a planet with volcanones and lava as rivers.  this planet could be rich in iron or something.  im not sure if we will see a solar system or not or just the planet. but if so having more then 1 sun would be good.

planet 2:

a planet that never changes with its sunlight. meaning half of a planet is Always night and filled with deadly creatures and poisoness plans, etc. the other always in sun like a desert but maybe desert nuggets as population.

planet 3:

http://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/memoryalpha/images/7/7a/Delphic_Expanse_sphere.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20070321204845&path-prefix=en

planet completly made out of plates . like in the picture. could be home of a cyborg (a.i.) population. maybe something we can our self do to our planet if you go the A.I. route.

I always liked the idea of a planet with only water and no landmasses.

Or perhaps floating islands/lands within the atmospheres of planets like Jupiter.

a cloud planet, maybe you'll need a special tech to cross the "cloud ground".

a no gravity planet, hook the planet or go away !

a storm planet, Storm everywhere and everytime, plants and animals should be adapted to the environnement.

underwater world, diamond planet, ice planet...

A Jelly Biome! Wuhu! Would be bouncy,eh? :)

Uh, uh i know! A Wood Planet, everyone loves Wood! Or Maybe a Planet fully made of diamond :o  (Btw 40 light years away from the earth there is actually a Planet fully made of diamond! Pretty cool isn't it?)

That's it (for now)! Yeah i keep thinking on awesome Planet types. (everyone want my ideas :P)

i'd suggest a Void-Like biome on a single planet made of dark matter and 0 gravity.

A Frozen planet with underground oceans.

A planet where it always rains.

A planet where it never rains.

A planet with methane lakes and oceans.

A fiery planet with lots of volcanoes.

A planet with hot springs and geysers(water based).

A planet with Gold for soil, diamonds for rocks.

A planet that one side always faces the sun, dark and light side of the planets would be permanent. Like our moon does to earth.

A planet full of predator animals possibly based on dinosaurs.

A planet with 10x gravity, one with .1 gravity. A planet where gravity is pulled towards one of the poles and not inwards.

A planet with no flat land, all mountains and such.

A planet with a deadly virus so the astronauts could not return home or the scout satellite would recognize it and bio suits would be needed or a cure prior.

Planets with no oxygen, to much oxygen(or other gases).

A planet where every creature can fly. No creature can fly(used with to much gravity perhaps?).

This could be endless so i will stop. Use them together, mix and match or don't use em at all, the list is what it is:)

A magnetic planet... See my link for more info :)

A planet that the two opposing hemispheres rotate in opposite directions constantly causing earthquakes. The planet would be far from it's parent star so the biome of the planet would gradually change from polar, temperate, desert, and finally lava, as you go from the poles to the equator. Why? The constant friction from the equator shifting would heat the equator and the heat would get less and less as you went further away.

An ancient hulk of a planet that has been partly shattered exposing the core, now cooled to solid metal. This would be a perfect opportunity to harvest rare earth metals and other minerals. Maybe have alien ruins dotted around the surface for your civilisation to investigate.

A planet that has such an eccentric orbit from the sun that for 1/4th of it's orbit it's dry and desert-like, another half (separated by summer and winter) it's cooler and things start to grow for a season before the last 1/3rd where it's a frozen wasteland. There would be aliens on this planet which had adapted to the eccentricity by living below ground for the summer, coming above and eating the vegetation that grows during the spring and autumn, and finally half hibernating, half hunting each other during the winter. This planet may require an understanding of xenozoology so your nuggets know when to venture from their colonies and when not to.

Suddenly realising my ideas might be a bit too graphics intensive XD

Another one would have a quest. It would be a typical desert planet with very little water but on the planet will be a crashed spaceship holding technology and a single stone with a galactic map etched on the surface. This map will point you to a lush temperate planet somewhere in the galaxy. The tech you gain would allow you to construct a very resource expensive ship that can travel to this planet (one use only). Once you get there you will be faced with a hostile civilisation that you must defeat, the rewards of which will be the planet that holds an even greater boost in technology and will keep producing tech, as well as a weaker version of the drive that got you there.

How about a planet with a biome connected to the existing living beings?

There they are, the small creatures called nuggets. Their courage and curiosity are growing so much that they achieve the space age, they begin to explore and perhaps  counquer the new planets.

Ice, Fire, Desert, Jungle, Jelly, Butter, who knows how many different biomes they have seen through their entire space exploration. Suddently they reach a biome that they have never seen.... .The fries , little habitants, are in a deep connection with the biome.

So the all idea about the connecting is similar with the movie avatar. The little fries live and survive thanks to the energy of the biome.

38.jpg

The interaction: In order to interact, you must first reach the planet and talk to the leader. Depending on you clothes you have some options;

Option 1: You reach, try to counquer, die. Since they are connected with the all planet energy, they can pretty much blow you up.

Option 2: You reach, use your diplomatic skills, have some nice clothes and voila, they may like you and agree to trade with you.

Option 3: You reach, use your diplomatic skills, fail miserably,

The Fries: They are smart, pretty, judge the others by their clothes (so be very careful with what you wear) but if they like you they are always there for you.

The trade: The whole point. If they accept to trade with you, you can choose from resources, technology or a mistery gift and in addiction you gain a powerful ally. In the opposite, you must give them your food, lots of food, so trade well. (or other thing very important to the nuggets developted late in the game).

Development: Once you become allys, you can trade whenever you want but be aware, they need time to replace the resources. The trade is still possible but that can lead to the death of some fries or maybe the all population....if that happens, the nuggets will be very sad, decrease their productivity and birth ratio.

This is the basic structure, all the specs can be modify. I just think this fits well with the game.

(tried my best english ;_;)

I have a few ideas I would like to see

Idea 1 Planet that is fiery hot in the day and fiercely cold at night. (song of Fire and Ice anyone?) maybe over time the atmosphere begins with mild weather and beings to thin making a harsher climate, more dramatic changes between night and day and need for the nuggets to adapt through technical means.

Idea 2 A place that is a mix of steppes and mountains to make mobility difficult

Idea 3 A place with Geysers and hot springs, with the occasional volcanic activity. It would be devastating if a new geyser erupted over a nugget settlement.

Idea 4 Apocalypse planet, a planet that is made of scare vegetation, natural disasters and low resources.

Dying planet

High amount of resources

Constant natural disasters

Limited time to get what you can before the planet explodes or becomes a lifeless rock (All vegetation dies, volcanoes erupt and cover the surface with lava, etc.)

Full resource Planets

-Diamond

-Gold

-Silver

Hard to populate because of no sources of Food, water. Terraforming couldn´t help at These planets as they are a full metal ball.

Historical Planets

-Dinosaur era planet. One wich is overpopulated by Dinosaurs and hard to colonize as of the danger they bring. Biomes would be as normal as on the starting planet (woodlands, deserts, oceans)

-Stone age populated planets. Meet new Nuggets wich are still in the Stone age, teach em spech, culture, civilisation.

Moving Planets

-Like comets, asteroids or some Kind. they will move around the whole Universum what would make trading very hard btw your stand alone planets and this one. But easy Exploration possible.

-Moons. As some Gas giants aren´t able to be populated, you still can drop your feet off on their moons. (small planet like objects that circle around the gas giants)

Rare Planets

-New Born planets. (Made of the collision between comets, asteroids. Nugget elektro trash wich is stacked in space) Dificult lv over 9000 to populate. Rich on resources. No Population.

-Death Stars (Stars or how we call ours, the sun) Planets made of the stars that after a while stoped burning but still not cooled yet. Hard to Keep Population up on them, but rich on resources and gas.

-Dark Matter planets. One of the most rare resources in the game. Used in Alien Technology and for fuel in Hyper Space Ships. Everything on this planet is going to kill you, even the planet itself.

What ya all think? :)

Planet ideas

First would would be a war destroyed planet your coming in 15 years after the war of the planet destroyed all life, you can still see hollowed out buildings and signs a civilization once inhabited this vast land.

Second idea would be a planet locked in civil war on a direct course for total destruction unless someone or god steps in and saves them.

A planet that's orbiting a black hole with highly exotic materials. It could be rocky, highly radioactive in various ways and without advanced knowledge of gravity and quantum mechanics, your nuggets and their spaceship would be exposed to extreme gravitaional forces and anomalies in space-time.

Not scientifically accurate, but i think it sounds pretty cool.

Possibly a Metal like planet made by nuggets them self or another race. It wouldn't have any resources but would be used as a trading/scientific/strategic/etc base. Could be constructed by your nuggets and could choose all the specs of said planet such as mass, size, density, magnetic field, etc and its specialization will it be used to wage war? or used to advance themselves technological or have the greatest trading hub in the known universe?

A planet with no sun.  I believe our astronomers call them rouge planets...  That'd be cool because to know what resources are on them you'd have to land or send probes.  They'd be a complete mystery until they are physically contacted.  They could be mineral rich or total death traps and you wouldn't know until you landed a probe or a nugget onto it.

A planet with no land, just water or whatever other liquid you'd like.

Developing planets - Planets residing in young solar systems.  These planets will be hard to reach and are still being bombarded by the cosmic debris that is still floating around in the young solar system.  They will be rich in resources, but very dangerous, potentially lacking an atmosphere, or having an uninhabitable atmosphere.

*random spitball ideas below*

Holographic planets?  Planets that appear to be mineral rich but are actually traps set by other civilizations, perhaps hiding inside the hologram to conquer your curious nuggets.

Abandoned Technological Society -  A planet that has advanced technology but was partially destroyed in a war of some sort,  no nuggets live here anymore and it is a goldmine for resources and new technology.  A reminder of what could have happened to your world had you chosen a different path.

Idea 1:
The Tribbles Planet.

If you ever watched the original Star Trek series, there's a small round furry species known as Tribbles that replicate 1000x faster than rabbits.  The planet in of itself is huge, but the Tribbles planet appears to be 3-4 times it's original size, not to mention fuzzy.  This is because of their extreme reproductive capacity.  They literally encompassed the whole planetary atmosphere.  In order to reach the planet surface, you either have to start shooting, which gets pretty messy, use a sonic device to make a tunnel which pop a stack of Trebbles into the vacuum of space - God help any planet they float their way to, or you can fly straight through them, which can be pretty hilarious... but be careful, you could end up ona crucial mission to capture or destroy a slew of Tribbles knocked out of their orbit and heading straight for your planet - and if you missed any, you better come up with a plan of action to purge the infestation, control it on a generic level or learn a great recipe quick because things can seriously get out of hand... well, quickly!

Incidentally, the Tripples are a great preemptive military tactic.  Drop them on an unsuspecting planet and before they know it, they're knee, waist, and neck deep in Tribbles... Unless they become a delicacy... who knows.

trektribbles1.png

Idea 2:

The Borg Planet.  "We are the Borg. Your biological and technological distinctiveness will be added to our own. Resistance is futile." Once infected, you have to have the have as many of the borg nanites surgically removed, but it's impossible to get them all.  They need to be hacked to gain control of them.  You're never quite the same, but as time goes by, you become stronger, smarter, faster... better.  A new species evolves as you impregnate your mate with the first borg hybrid, and depending on how it's raised, your offspring can be a force of good, or evil.

borg_cube1.jpgAlice-Krige-Borg-Queen-Star-Trek-8-First

Idea 3:

A planet of higher thinking beings with the power to do anything imaginable with the power of thought - controlling matter, thought, and the very molecules that we're made from.

Clearly I'm getting on board a little late here, but I thought I'd add some ideas regardless :)

Planet 1 - a false planet. You got good readings and decided the planet seemed like a good place to visit. However, en route, something catastrophic happened, and when you get there, the planet is dead. No atmosphere, no life.

Planet 2 - a planet that is suffering from space debris (i.e. asteroids) that smash into it, leading to localised destruction and randomised changes to the biomes. A "roulette" planet.

Planet 3 - Twin planets: two planets close together (you can see one from the other) and so have to set up local transport links (i.e. one might have lots of water, the other lots of easy to access metal rock).

Planet 4 - Already inhabited planets... you have to decide whether to try and integrate, or exterminate the indigenous intelligent lifeform

You could also think of planets in other ways... how about a spaceship with a ecosystem inside it (think Marrow by Robert Reed), or Arthur C Clarke's Rama series...
